You get to live only once

The spike in number of suicides in Jammu and Kashmir has sent the alarm bells ringing. According to the data released by the NCRB, J&K recorded 13.9% increase in the suicide cases in 2021.
The NCRB stated that among the major causes for taking the extreme step by people ‘Family Problems’ and ‘Illness’ accounted for 33.2% and 18.6% of total suicides respectively during 2021 in India.
‘Drug Abuse/ Alcoholic Addiction’ (6.4%), ‘Marriage Related Issues’ (4.8%), ‘Love Affairs’ (4.6%), ‘Bankruptcy or Indebtedness’ (3.9%), ‘Unemployment’ (2.2%) ,‘Failure in Examination’ (1.0%), ‘Professional/Career Problem’ (1.6%) and ‘Poverty’ (1.1%) were other causes of suicides, it said.
Among professions, people who were self-employed and those who were engaged as daily wagers registered the biggest increase in deaths by suicide, followed by salaried workers and students.
Not long ago the suicides were unheard in J&K as the cases were lowest in the world but during the past few years the things have changed for the worse as there has been a substantial increase in suicidal tendencies. In some cases, the hidden trauma of life comes to the fore and what unfolds is nothing but disturbing and heart-wrenching. The death of a child is the worst nightmare for the parents. It becomes even worse when it is self-inflicted.
Every death by suicide leaves behind a trail of questions and a deep sense of helplessness. There is a need to identify the crisis building within ourselves and others, and to learn how to avert it.
The government alone cannot do anything. Society, everyone including parents, teachers, clinicians, officers and politicians should be asking why and what can be done to prevent the people from taking such extreme step.
The Covid-19 pandemic which broke out in 2019 wreaked havoc in the lives of people and led to humans getting confined within their homes. The pandemic halted every activity and led to many people losing their jobs. The experts claim that people losing their livelihoods could one of the major reasons for them developing the suicidal tendencies.
While no one can say with accuracy why suicide has become such a crisis among the people especially young, there are several factors which the society needs to look into and work towards making the youngsters aware about the fact one gets only one life and it has to be lived.
