Different Ball Game | | | The Democratic Azad Party led by former J&K Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, approaching Election Commission of India to get a party symbol registered is an indication that the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir can be announced anytime. This time around the assembly elections in J&K are going to be an entirely different ball game. No political party at this point of time can claim that it’s in a comfortable position and it can sail through. The abrogation of Article 370 and the way Centre has managed the J&K affairs have changed the very concept of governance. The people are getting the benefits of the centrally sponsored schemes on their door steps. The officials have been made to understand that their job is to serve the people and ensure that no one faces any difficulty. The political parties in J&K are in no position to raise the slogan of good governance as the administration led by Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, has set the new benchmarks of governance. The parties which are raising the issue of getting back Article 370 have no takers as the people are aware that nothing will come back and most of them are of the opinion that the scrapping of the J&K’s special status has led to unprecedented development in the Union Territory. Azad has made it clear that Article 370 won’t come back and his party has not joined the fray to peddle lies but he has stated that he would fight for the restoration of J&K’s statehood. Other parties till now seem indecisive about what they have to fight for. Another important factor that would dominate the forthcoming assembly elections in J&K is the redrawing of assembly constituencies. It’s for the first time in the past 70-years that Jammu and Kashmir regions will almost have equal representation in the legislative assembly. The Kashmir based parties won’t find it easy to reach the chief minister’s office. This time around chances of the Jammu leader becoming a chief minister look very bright. The preparations for elections have commenced, now it’s for the political parties to decide with what they would approach the voters. One thing is for sure that these parties cannot sell old wine in a new bottle. Leaders can’t just make promises, they will have to deliver. |
