Tourism Boom | | | The record tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir during the past few years have infused new life into the ailing tourism industry. Pakistan sponsored insurgency which broke out in J&K in 1990 hit the tourism industry hard and led to the closure of hotels, restaurants, cinema halls and other places especially in Kashmir. People of Jammu didn’t allow the terrorists sponsored by Pakistan to enter into the region and gave them a befitting reply but these terrorists managed to sneak into Kashmir and succeeded in creating fear psychosis in the minds of people. They vandalized cinema halls and other recreational places. They ensured that people are terrified to an extent that they close down everything and follow their diktats. After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcated it into two Union Territories—situation changed. The Centre has taken control and has given free hand to the security forces to wipe out terrorism from Jammu and Kashmir. The efforts being put in by the security forces have yielded positive results. The ground situation has changed. The fear of terrorists has almost ended. Either they have been eliminated or they have surrendered. The improvement in the security scenario has led to the dead business units getting revived. The influx of tourists has once again brought the tourism players to the forefront. They have been busy handling the tourist rush. During the past 3-years the government has also shifted its focus towards the Jammu region and the spots that were ignored by the former Kashmir centric regimes are being developed. In a nutshell, the tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir is flourishing and it’s emerging as one of the mainstays of the economy. Recently, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Parshottam Rupala who visited J&K said that the record number of tourists visiting the UT speaks volumes about the new and changed Jammu Kashmir. He praised the warm hospitality of the people of J&K and hoped that tourist inflow to the Union Territory will keep on increasing. Last month Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated cinema halls in Shopian, Pulwama and Srinagar districts and announced that all the 20 districts of J&K would get cinema halls. The government is taking all the possible steps to boost tourism in the Union Territory and enabling people to earn their livelihoods. |
