Retire or fall in line
11/3/2022 11:03:42 PM
Former Deputy Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Sheikh Imran meeting Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and after the meeting issuing a statement urging the moderate separatist leader to join the mainstream politics has triggered speculations that the ground is being built for Mirwaiz to fall in the line.
Recently, there were reports that another separatist Bilal Gani Lone, has also decided to join the mainstream camp and after the news reports appeared Lone maintained silence over the issue. Very importantly he didn’t deny the reports that he has had a change of heart and is all set to say goodbye to the separatist camp.
After the reports came to fore, Bilal Gani Lone also addressed a rally in his hometown Handwara in North Kashmir apparently to test the waters.
Separatists planning to change their turfs, is an indication that Kashmir is changing and it’s changing fast. The separatists have realized that they can no longer act as the advocates of Pakistan and if they have to remain relevant they will have to join the national mainstream and work for the welfare of the people.
Even Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has not denied the news reports that he may join the mainstream camp. He has also maintained silence over the issue.
After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcated it into two Union Territories—the political scenario in Kashmir has changed completely. The separatists, who used to run a parallel system by calling strikes and orchestrating street protests and stone pelting have been cut to size. Ones who were instrumental in fomenting trouble have been put behind the bars, while a few of them have died. Hurriyat Conference, a conglomerate of separatists, has been dismantled. The henchmen of the Pakistan stooges in Kashmir are not seen anywhere as the funding channels of their bosses have been choked.
The National Investigation Agency and State Investigation Agency have broken the back of terrorists by blocking the Hawala channels through which money used to flow into the Valley illegally.
The separatists like Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Bilal Gani Lone have been left with limited options. Either they have to retire from politics or join the mainstream camp. Ball is in their court and they have to choose.
