Factionalism in Congress | | | The Congress Party is once again in news for factionalism in Jammu and Kashmir. The exit of veteran Congress leader and former J&K chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad from the party has brought the ‘grand old party’ of the country on the crossroads in J&K. Many Congress leaders resigned from the party in support of Azad and joined his Democratic Azad Party led by him. Despite the Congress Party facing a crisis like situation in the Union Territory, a few leaders of the party are still indulging in factionalism and are trying to build lobbies. According to media reports a few Congress leaders instead of working towards rebuilding the party are busy in such activities that could prove detrimental to the party and would lessen its chances further to make any impact in the forthcoming assembly elections. After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and divided it into two Union Territories—political scenario in J&K has changed completely. The Congress Party has been struggling to maintain its relevance in the changed scenario as the things haven’t been that easy. Azad saying goodbye to the party has added to problems of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. The Congress leaders should understand that if they don’t put up a united front then they would be doing a great disservice to the party and would make things difficult for the leadership. The present scenario in the Congress Party is dismal. If the corrective measures are not taken, the party will have to pay a heavy price. Prevailing mess, lobbyism and factionalism won’t help the party’s cause. It’s not only Congress that faces a daunting task, parties like National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party too are sailing in the same boat as the slogans which the politicians used to raise in the past have become outdated. The redrawing of assembly constituencies has brought Jammu region at par with Kashmir and there is every possibility about a Dogra from Jammu region becoming the Chief Minister of J&K for the first time in 70-years. People of Jammu region would definitely prefer a party that would take a leader from their region to the Chief Minister’s office. The Congress Party will have to work very hard to stay relevant in the changed political scenario. It has to keep its flock together to make a comeback. If its leaders keep on fighting with each other then there is every possibility about the Congress Party losing its relevance completely in Jammu and Kashmir.
