Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 21: Besides other factors which emerge after counting of votes, the election 2008 will always be known for a unique feature –the lottery election.

As many as 1353 candidates in fray for 87 seats, the average size of candidates per constituency is 15. There may be straight or triangular contest on around 15 to 20 seats and on the remaining winning election is almost like a winning a lottery –heavyweights have made the job of prediction pundits tough. All they know is the fact that 1266 are sure to suffer defeat.

The ongoing seven-phased Assembly elections has seen the highest number of 1353 candidates in fray, breaking all the previous records and nearly doubling the figure of contestants in 2002 J&K polls.

Of the 1353 contestants this time, as many as 468 are independents and 67 women. In comparison, out of the total 705 contestants in 2002 Assembly elections, the number of independent candidates was 242 and that of women only 29.

In 1972 Assembly elections in the State, the number of contestants was only 342, which went to 408 in 1977 assembly elections, followed by 510 in 1983, 515 in 1987 and 541 in the Assembly elections held in Jammu and Kashmir in 1996. This indicates that number of contestants has increased in all the Assembly elections, though the increase of the candidates this time is the highest ever.

As far as the seventh and final phase of elections is concerned for which polling is being held on December 24, the total number of contestants is 393. They include 151 independents as well as 31 women contestants.
