Railway upgrading railway infrastructure at Varanasi Cantt in Mission Mode | | | agencies NEW DELHI, Dec 8: Varanasi is one of the most ancient cities in the world. Lakhs of pilgrims from all over the world visit the city every year. Northern Railway is continuously upgrading its infrastructure since 2014 to provide a comfortable and convenient travel experience to its users. At present Varanasi Jn. (Cantt.) The station of NR handles 112 trains per day coming to the holy town from different directions of the country. This includes India's first semi-high speed train, the very prestigious and popular Vande Bharat Express. The station at present is witnessing an increase of almost 150 % w.r.t to last year in terms of number of passengers coming to the station. Footfall at the station has increased to 67,216 per day (average). NR has roped in RITES for Redevelopment work of the Varanasi Jn. This includes façade improvement, revamping existing Platforms, creation of 2 new platforms, construction of two new FOBs and a third entry to the station. Movement of Freight Varanasi lies in between two major metro cities Delhi and Kolkata. There is a heavy movement of goods trains on this section. To ensure safety of operation, movement and to ease out the mobility, the need was felt to divert the freight traffic outside the passenger area. For this, a Goods bypass line is planned and under construction from Shivpur, reducing cross-movement through the yard. Through this bypass line freight trains will move from Kashi to Shivpur without entering Varanasi Jn. Station. It will decongest the station area further leading to increasing the speed and punctuality of trains. Varanasi Yard Remodelling (Under-construction) Target for completion is March-2023. Due to this construction work, at present passengers sometimes are facing problems due to operational reasons, after the completion of this work, the movement of passenger and goods trains will be smooth. Increase in Loop Length & Platform Length in Varanasi Yard which is required for safety of passengers. Segregation of streams from Banaras (PF-1 to 4), Lohta (PF-1 to 5) & Shivpur (PF-6 to 9) sides to ease traffic movement. Connectivity of all platforms (1 to 9) from Varanasi City (BCY) & Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay Jn (DDU) sides. Two additional full length passenger platforms (10 & 11) with FOB and development of 3rd entry. Widening of PF-3 to eliminate SOD infringement due to existing FOBs. Goods bypass line from Shivpur side, reducing cross-movement through yard. Two new washing lines & 4 sick line pits. |
