Polls And Politicians | | | After the declaration of the results of Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat polls, the voices to hold the maiden assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are becoming shriller. Former J&K chief minister and veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad was the first among politicians who raised the issue. “There is no reason to further delay assembly elections in J&K. Law and order situation has improved considerably. After the improvement in the weather, assembly elections should be held within six months,” Azad said. Politicians in J&K are desperate to make a comeback. Since 2018, when the PDP-BJP government fell after the BJP pulled out from the Mehbooba Mufti led dispensation in J&K, political leaders have had no role to play. Political leaders are aware of the fact that after August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcated it into two Union Territories—political scenario in J&K has changed and none of the political parties would find it easy to form the government. Another important factor which everyone is aware about is that J&K is no longer a state and the Lieutenant Governor appointed by the Centre will always remain the boss and his decision would be final. Preparations for assembly elections in J&K have already commenced as the electoral rolls have been finalized and the district electoral officers have been meeting the representatives of political parties to finalize the modalities. There is every possibility about elections being held soon after the winter season ends. Political parties have started making the preparations by reaching out to the people but the politicians will have to work very hard to convince the people to vote for them as J&K has witnessed unprecedented development on all the fronts during the past three years. Besides Azad, other leaders are also demanding that the elections should be held as they want to become visible. They are aware of the fact that if the polls are not held they would lose their relevance and their political careers would end. More than people, elections are important for the politicians as these are directly linked to their survival. |
