KVK promotes lemon grass cultivation

REASI, Dec 19: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting and educating the farmers on lemon grass farming and many new farmers are showing keen interest for the adoption of its farming. According to Sr.Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr.Banarsi Lal, Reasi distt. of J&K has an immense potential in lemongrass farming as some areas of the distt. are heavily infested with the monkey menace and this crop is not damaged by the monkeys. He narrated that KVK, Reasi is making efforts to minimize the effect of monkey menace in the area by imparting the skill on lemongrass farming and encouraging the farmers for the value addition in its oil. He said that farmers can generate more income and employment by the cultivation of lemongrass. He informed that lemon grass contains number of medicinal and aromatic properties such as carminative and insect repellent, perfumes, cosmetics, herbal teas and non-alcoholic beverages.
He said that it can also be used as an antioxidant and its oil has strong lemon-like fragrance, due to high percentage of citral in its oil. He added that its commercialization can open some new avenues of income and employment in the distt. He said that under rain fed conditions; this crop can be harvested for three times in a year and informed that steam distillation is used to extract the oil from the leaves of lemongrass which is rampantly used in soap, cosmetics, medicines and insecticides. He stressed on the cluster based approach and Farmers Producer Organisations (FPOs) for the more returns. He said that by the value addition in lemongrass farmers can get more benefits. He narrated that lemongrass can transform the lives of the farmers of monkeys affected areas of the distt.
