Srinagar, other parts of Kashmir experience coldest nights

SRINAGAR, Dec 21: Most parts of the Kashmir valley including Srinagar experienced the coldest night of the season on the day one of the 40-day-long harshest part of the winter "Chilai Kalan" begins on a chilly and dry note on Wednesday.
Meteorological Centre forecast currently weather is mainly clear at most places of J&K. Mainly Dry weather till December 25. Shallow FOG may develop during morning hours in plains of Jammu during December 22-24 (60 per cent chance).
From December 26-30 generally Cloudy Sky with intermittent Light to Moderate Snow at scattered places of Kashmir, higher reaches of Jammu and light rain in plains of Jammu( 60 per cent chance).
The MeT has also issued an advisory stating that Snowfall & below freezing temperature may lead to temporary disruption of surface transportation on places like Mughal road, Zojila, Karnah, Sadna top and other during December 26-27, although there's there is ?NO? forecast of any Major snow spell
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, experienced season's coldest night on Wednesday with temperature plummeting to minus 4.2 degree Celsius against the minus 3.4 degree Celsius previous night. It was minus 2.7 degree Celsius below normal during this period of the season. Tourist hot spot of Pahalgam in south Kashmir continued to be the coldest part of the Kashmir valley with minimum temperature dipped to minus 6.2 degree Celsius against minus 5.4 degree Celsius on Tuesday. It was minus 1.80 degree Celsius below normal during this time of the season.
Ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir had a low of minus 4.6 degree Celsius against minus 4.0 degree Celsius recorded the previous night. it was still 0.2 degree Celsius above normal for the valley of meadow during this period of the season.
Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway recorded a low of minus 4.2 degree Celsius against the minus 3.6 degree Celsius while Kukernag recorded a low of minus 2.4 degree Celsius against minus 1.8 degree Celsius recorded a day ago.
The frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara dipped to minus 4.4 degree Celsius against minus 3.9 degree Celsius which was minus 2.0 degree Celsius below normal for the place in north Kashmir, the MeT office said.
