NEW DELHI, Dec 22: The Environment Unit of MIER College of Education organized a webinar on the theme "Plastic Waste Management" and an awareness session on the topic, "Solid Waste Management and Vermicomposting".
Vaibhav Arora, Karo-Sambhav Private Limited, Delhi was the resource person for the webinar. The objective of the webinar was to establish environment friendly plastic waste disposal solution. He gave profound awareness on plastic pollution, how this can lead to rapid degradation of the environment and ecosystem. He discussed sources and different types of plastic waste, the repercussions of the wrong disposal, and various effective management methods such as reduce, reuse, recycle, explore, and dispose. He provided many practical examples of landfills and dumpsites which are creating hazards for people living in that area.
Additionally, Dr. Monika Bajaj, Deputy HoD, UG Department, conducted an awareness session on "Solid Waste Management and Vermicomposting." The objective was to bring into focus the importance of the process of collecting, treating and disposing of solid material that is discarded after the use and can create unsanitary conditions leading to pollution of environment and out-breaks of vector -borne diseases. She also listed simple steps that each one of us can take in our daily lives to reduce the waste that we generate. Moreover, the students were taken to the composting site to get practical experience in vermicomposting. The students got knowledge about decomposition process using various species of earth worms to create a mixture of nutrient-rich organic fertilizer. Further, it also helps in domestic waste management. The changing ingredients in the vermicompost help create compost that facilitates special requirements for plants. The students were encouraged to use separate dustbins for the segregation of waste into bio-degradable and non-biodegradable.
The programme was organized under the supervision of Suman Gupta, Incharge Environment Unit.
