Big jolt for AAP
2/17/2023 10:39:21 PM

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which had appeared on the political scene of Jammu and Kashmir soon after it won the assembly elections in Punjab has failed to make any impact in the Union Territory.
In the latest development, chairman of the state coordination committee of AAP, a three-time MLA and former J&K Education Minister, Harsh Dev Singh announced his decision to quit AAP in order to revive the Panthers Party, a regional political party in Jammu and Kashmir. Singh had joined AAP on May 8, 2022, in New Delhi.
Singh’s resignation is a big jolt for the AAP and an indication that the party is out of the political race in J&K. The AAP’s plan to make inroads into the Union Territory has taken a severe hit due to Harsh Dev Singh’s resignation.
Soon after Arvind Kejriwal led AAP had announced its entry into Jammu and Kashmir, it had led to leaders of many regional parties joining the party.
The AAP leadership had promised that it would work on the ground for the people and would emerge as a viable alternative for them. But the AAP’s central leadership couldn’t find time to even formulate a strategy for handling Jammu and Kashmir.
Within a few months the leaders from J&K who had joined the party have said goodbye to AAP and are looking for other alternatives.
Soon after the AAP had appeared on the J&K’s political scene, many people had predicted that the party wouldn’t be able to emerge as a force. The political scene of J&K is different from Delhi and Punjab.
The AAP had tried to rope in the local leaders but it couldn’t hold them together due to many reasons. A few politicians had termed AAP as tourists and had predicted that the party would appear and disappear.
Harsh Dev Singh has decided to revive his parent party i.e. Panthers Party as it was considered to be one of the strong regional voices in J&K.
In the given scenario, regional parties can play an important role and Singh’s decision to work towards rebuilding Panthers Party can bring many leaders together who are looking for a viable alternative. Reviving the Panthers Party is a good idea.
