Srinagar, Feb 26: A Western Disturbance (WD) is likely to cause rain and snow in Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours, officials said.
The WD can cause rain, snow between February 27 evening till March 3 morning in Jammu and Kashmir, an independent weather observer Faizan Arif said.
He said generally, moderate rain showers are expected at most places in the plains, along with lightning, thunder, and gusty winds in some areas.
Moderate to heavy snowfall is also possible at higher reaches of the Jammu and Kashmir. However, no continuous rainfall is expected anywhere, he said and added that the temperatures in plains can stay below 6 degree Celsius on March 1 and 2. The weather in Kashmir was overcast amid Meteorological Department forecasts of scattered to fairly widespread light rain or snow over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, and the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir experienced light rainfall during the past 24 hours, MeT office said. Reports of light snowfall were also received from the ski resort of Gulmarg today.
Srinagar received 0.5mm of rainfall while Gulmarg experienced 0.2mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours till 0830hours today.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature at 7.3 degree Celsius which was 5.8 degree Celsius above normal.
The maximum temperature was also 7.7 degree above normal against 11.1 degree Celsius normal during this period of the season.
Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway recorded a low of 5.2 degree Celsius while tourist hot spot of Pahalgam had a low of 3.2 degree Celsius on Sunday.
Kupwara recorded a low of 3.0 degree Celsius and Kokernag 4.3 degree Celsius today, the Met office said.
