Election Talks | | | Senior J&K BJP leader, Sunil Sethi holding a closed door meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and discussing various issues, including assembly elections, with him has triggered speculations that the Election Commission of India may sound the poll bugle soon. The preliminary preparations have been completed and the electoral rolls stand revised. Other nitty-gritty’s have already been discussed. Improvement in the overall security situation of Jammu and Kashmir is also a plus point and the politicians are banking on it. The Union Home Minister has made it amply clear that J&K’s statehood would be restored only after the elections are held. For time being the political parties in Jammu and Kashmir will have to remain content with an assembly in a Union Territory and not in a State. All the parties are eagerly waiting for the Election Commission of India (ECI) to announce the date. Last assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2014 which led to the PDP and BJP coming together and forming a coalition government. However, in 2018 the BJP pulled out from the Mehbooba Mufti led government. In 2019, the Centre abrogated Article 370 and bifurcated J&K into two Union Territories, J&K and Ladakh. J&K was turned into a Union Territory with Assembly while Ladakh is a UT without a legislature. After 2019, the political scenario in J&K has changed completely. The assembly constituencies have been redrawn and Jammu region has been brought at par with Kashmir Valley. Most of the political analysts are of the opinion that no single party can form the government and no Kashmir based party will be able to call the shots. Chances about J&K getting a Dogra Chief Minister for the first time in seventy years look bright. During the past three years new regional parties have made inroads into Congress bastions and the “Grand Old Party” is likely to face a tough challenge from the party launched by its former veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. In Kashmir, traditional parties i.e. National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party won’t also find it easy as formations like Apni Party led by Altaf Bukhari, Peoples Conference headed by Sajad Gani Lone are all set make the competition tough. Bharatiya Janata Party is keeping its cards close to its chest as the party leaders are aware that forming a government alone in J&K is not going to be a cakewalk. |
