Opposition building pressure | | | National opposition parties and regional parties from Jammu and Kashmir recently submitted a memorandum to Election Commission of India, seeking early assembly polls in the Union Territory. Leaders of the prominent political parties including National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah, Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and other senior leaders of national political parties submitted a memorandum to the ECI which stated that Jammu and Kashmir has been without a Legislative Assembly and an elected government for past five years and the polls shouldn’t be delayed further. Speculations have been rife that the assembly elections in J&K can be held later this year as all the preparations have been finalized but till date the ECI has not made any formal announcement about when elections in the Union Territory will be held. After the abrogation of Article 370 three years ago, the political scenario in J&K has changed completely. None of the Kashmir based parties as of date are in a position to call shots. The Delimitation Commission has redrawn the assembly constituencies and has brought Jammu and Kashmir regions at par vis-à-vis distribution of the seats. Whenever elections are held in Jammu and Kashmir none of the political parties are likely to form the government on their own. They will have to enter into a coalition. The National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been making desperate attempts to bring all the Kashmir based parties together but their attempts have not yielded the desired results. In order to forge unity NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah had called an All Party Meeting to discuss various issues but Peoples Conference, Apni Party and Democratic Progressive Azad Party stayed away from the meeting. In the given scenario traditional parties in Kashmir have been left with limited options. These parties are now desperate to become relevant and they know the only way out is to contest the elections and become a part of the system. National Conference president and three time J&K chief minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, is leading the campaign to seek elections in the Union Territory and is trying to build the pressure but it seems an uphill struggle for him and other leaders. |
