No one is above the law | | | Chief Secretary Dr Arun Kumar Mehta has passed clear directions to the Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (JKPDCL) not to hesitate to take action against influential defaulters. While chairing a high-level meeting the Chief Secretary impressed upon the officers of the Power Development Department to ensure that transmission and distribution losses are curtailed. He gave a clear message to the officials that no one should be spared. Earlier this month the administration disconnected electricity connections of many people in Jammu, including former CM and Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chief Ghulam Nabi Azad, BJP State president Ravinder Raina and former BJP MLA Neelam Langeh, for non-payment of arrears. The electricity was disconnected after the politicians didn’t pay attention to the notices that were served to them by the Power Department to clear their dues. In the past too, many times the PDD has been giving opportunities to the people to pay the bills. Initiatives have also been taken to pay the bills in easy installments under the Amnesty scheme. The message is clear that no one is above the law and whosoever uses any commodity will have to pay for it. And no one will be spared. After the abrogation of Article 370 the government has been working hard to ensure that J&K becomes self reliant in the power sector. Sincere efforts have been put in to provide electricity 24x7. But to avail the benefits people have to cooperate they have to keep on clearing their dues on time and need to make judicious use of electricity. During the past three years incidents of power thefts have declined as the Power Department has acted tough against the power thieves. A sustained campaign is being run to collect the revenue and act against the defaulters. Introduction of the online services has made the collection system transparent and payment of bills has become easy. The power scenario has improved as thrust is being laid on utilizing the hydel resources of the Union Territory. The new power projects are coming up and in the next few years J&K would achieve 100% self-sufficiency. But the need of the hour is to set the internal mechanism right. And the J&K administration is taking the steps in the right direction. Acting tough against the defaulters has driven home a point that everyone has to fall in the line. |
