Vacuum in J&K needs to be filled | | | Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar recently stated that the poll-body is aware about a vacuum in Jammu and Kashmir which needs to be filled. He also dispelled the notion that the revision of electoral rolls would disturb the schedule, conduct of polls in the Union Territory. He maintained that the fresh revision of electoral rolls in Jammu & Kashmir is aimed at bringing the voter list of J&K at par with the rest of the country. Pertinently the ECI last week ordered a fresh revision of electoral exercise in J&K. This is the second such exercise ordered by the poll-body in the Union Territory in less than one year. The CEC during the press conference didn’t mention any date on which the elections will be held in J&K but hinted that these could be held any time as the poll body is aware about the void in the Union Territory. Earlier this month leaders of the opposition parties along with National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah called on the CEC in New Delhi seeking early election in J&K which has been without a political government since 2018, when BJP pulled out from the coalition government led by Mehbooba Mufti. Speculations are rife that elections in J&K could be held in September this year and all the preparations have been made for the same. Political parties are desperate to make a comeback as they have been out of power for a long time but politicians are finding it hard to convince the Centre that they would be good rulers. After the abrogation of Article 370, J&K has witnessed unprecedented development. Many incomplete projects have been completed and numerous new projects have come up. The governance deficit has been addressed. The benefits of centrally sponsored schemes have reached the common people and many other issues have been resolved. Politicians are aware of the fact that new benchmarks have been set after J&K’s transition into a Union Territory. There is a strong possibility about assembly elections being held later this year but the question is will the politicians be able to handle the affairs how the Centre has handled them? Elections are an important part of any democracy and sooner or later these will be held in J&K and politicians will have to live upto the expectations of the people after the vacuum is filled. |
