Improving Road Connectivity | | | During the past three years the government has worked hard to improve the road connectivity across Jammu and Kashmir. After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcate it into two Union Territories—the Centre has ensured that all the far-flung areas in J&K get motorable roads. In the year 2021, J&K clinched the third spot in the country for achieving 91% target under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), while the Udhampur district bagged top position among 30 districts across the country. In 2020-21, Jammu and Kashmir constructed 3,166 kilometer road out of the allotted target of 3500. The construction of the new roads connected 119 habitants, out of 177 targeted. During the past three years road macadamization touched a record level of 20.6 km per day as compared to 6.54 km per day before 2019 while total road length in the Union Territory increased to 41,141 kilometers and the percentage of blacktop roads reached to 74 percent as compared to 66 percent during the period. The construction of new roads has reduced the travel time between the major towns and districts in J&K. The distance between Kishtwar and Jammu which used to get covered in 8 hours is now covered in 5 hours. Similarly distance between Jammu and Srinagar cities is covered in around 6 hours, earlier the same distance was covered in 8 to 12 hours. In 2021-22, J&K was once again ranked among top three performing States/UTs at national level for construction of road length per year under PMGSY. The Public Works Department (R&B) constructed PMGSY road length of 3284 kms in 2021-22 and connected 114 habitations through road networks by executing 427 schemes in the year. Besides improving the road connectivity the government has been emphasizing upon striking a balance between the ecology and development. Possibilities are being explored to minimize the damage caused to the environment while constructing these roads. Awareness is being created about the benefits of the new road projects among the people so that they don’t offer any resistance to avoid unnecessary delays. When Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari visited J&K in April this year he announced that the road network in Jammu and Kashmir will be developed at par with American roads as developmental works worth Rs 1,25,000 crore are underway in the region. Roads are the lifeline of any region and the government has embarked on the mission to strengthen the road connectivity in J&K. |
