Union Minister Smriti Irani launches single use plastics awareness campaign | | | Early Times Report UDHAMPUR, May 19: Smriti Irani, the Union Minister for Women, Child Development, and Minority Affairs, arrived in Udhampur today for a two-day visit to the district as part of the Public Outreach Programme initiated by the Modi government. During her visit, she launched an awareness campaign on Single Use Plastics (SUP) in the jurisdiction of the Patnitop Development Authority (PDA). The Patnitop Development Authority has taken significant steps to enforce a complete ban on Single Use Plastics throughout its jurisdiction, in alignment with the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, and Patnitop Development Authority Solid Waste Management Bye-Laws, 2021. The aim is to combat plastic pollution and safeguard the fragile ecosystem for a sustainable future. The awareness campaign led by Smriti Irani aimed to educate the public about the risks associated with Single Use Plastics, gauge public opinion, and promote the use of alternatives. At the scenic location of Patnitop, surrounded by lush green meadows, Irani appreciated the eco-friendly efforts of the PDA. She urged stakeholders and tourists to support and cooperate in preserving the natural beauty and ecological balance of the Patnitop Tourism Circuit. "Plastics have detrimental effects on all living beings and ecosystems. Single Use Plastics, in particular, contribute to significant littering. The best approach is to reduce their usage and eventually eliminate them. Although behavioral change may seem challenging, it is not impossible. Here, in this picturesque destination, tourists, tourism stakeholders, and the local community must lead the way in transitioning away from plastic reliance. Through innovation in plastic management, exploring feasible alternatives, and effective pollution management, we can make a difference," emphasized the Union Minister. During the event, the Chief Executive Officer of PDA stated, "PDA has undertaken various initiatives to maintain a 'Clean Patnitop Green Patnitop.' We encourage stakeholders to share their suggestions and insights on effectively implementing the ban, innovative solutions, and alternatives to plastics." Among those present at the occasion were the Deputy Commissioner of Udhampur, Deputy Commissioner of Ramban, SSPs of Udhampur and Ramban, PRI representatives, and other dignitaries." |
