Early Times Report JAMMU, May 20: The State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), in collaboration with Government Medical College Jammu, organized a scientific workshop on "Organ and Tissue Donation." The event, held at the Auditorium of GMC Jammu, saw the participation of over 150 medical professionals, HoDs, faculty, and nursing students. The workshop was conducted under the patronage of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India. The program commenced with a lamp lighting ceremony, inaugurated by Dr. Shashi Sudhan Sharma, Principal and Dean of GMC Jammu, Ashwani Khajuria, Administrator of AHJ, Dr. Elias Sharma, HoD Urology and Renal Transplant Unit SSH Jammu & Nodal Officer SOTTO J&K, Dr. Haroon Salaria, HoD Neurosurgery, Dr. Anju Jamwal, HoD Anesthesiology, Dr. Rakesh Bahl, Professor P&SM, Dr. Anita Vig, Professor Anesthesiology, Dr. Narender Bhutyal, Medical Superintendent GMCH, and Dr. Rehana Bashir, Deputy Medical Superintendent GMCH. During the inauguration, SOTTO also released its first annual newsletter titled "Naman," which highlights the organization's activities and achievements. The workshop featured renowned speakers who discussed various aspects of organ donation. The program aimed to create awareness among medical professionals from different disciplines to enhance organ donation, retrieval, and transplantation in India, ultimately saving precious lives. Dr. Elias Sharma, in his welcome address, emphasized the need for regular programs like this to promote mass-level cadaveric organ donation in India and maintain continuous awareness among the public. Dr. Shashi Sudhan Sharma, the Chief Guest, emphasized the importance of providing hope and a second chance at life to those in need through organ donation. She encouraged individuals to pledge and donate their organs after their demise. Dr. Haroon Salaria delivered a talk on "Identification of Donors and Brain Stem Death Declaration," highlighting the legal definition of brain death and its determination process. Dr. Anita Vig spoke about "How to Maintain a Donor," discussing the management of brain-dead donors and the use of simplified methods to improve their care. Dr. Ashok Sharma provided insights into eye donation and transplantation, emphasizing the need for eye banks and different types of keratoplasty. He concluded his presentation with the message "Eyes Never Die" and encouraged others to pledge for eye/organ donation. Dr. Sandhya Arora shed light on "Organ Donation in Medico-Legal Cases," discussing practical scenarios involved in such cases. Gagandeep Kour and Ms. Sonia Bassan, transplant coordinators from GMCH, shared their expertise on "Challenges of Organ Donation" and the "Role of Transplant Coordinator," respectively. The vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Elias Sharma, and the program was successfully coordinated and managed by Mr. Irfan Ahmad Lone, Transplant Coordinator SOTTO, Anshu Sharma, Consultant (IEC/Media), and Nisha Sharma, DEO. |
