Early Times Report JAMMU, May 31: NSS Unit (Cheshta) of Govt. GLDM Degree College Hiranagar organized a seminar on the occasion of "World No Tobacco Day" on 31st May 2023. The seminar, held under the guidance of Principal Dr. Pragya Khanna, aimed to raise awareness among students about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption on health and the environment, promoting the theme of 'Grow Food Not Tobacco'. Dr. Guru Sharma from Sub District Hospital Hiranagar served as the resource person for the seminar. He highlighted the alarming statistics, such as the conversion of 3.5 million hectares of land annually for tobacco cultivation worldwide, leading to deforestation of 200,000 hectares per year. Dr. Guru Sharma also discussed how tobacco cultivation contributes to soil degradation, desertification, and soil fertility depletion. During the seminar, all participants took a pledge to refrain from tobacco consumption and to work towards making their families, society, and environment tobacco-free. They committed to spreading the message of a tobacco-free India among the masses, with a focus on fellow students. Prof. Rakesh Sharma, NSS Advisor, shed light on the detrimental effects of tobacco on health, families, society, and the environment. NSS volunteers Shubham, Kritaka, and Preeti from B.Sc. Sem.2nd delivered speeches on the harmful effects of tobacco. The stage was managed by Anu Sambyal from B.A. Sem.2nd. The formal vote of thanks was presented by Prof. Kiran Thapa, Councillor of Nasha Mukat Bharat Abhiyan. The program was attended by Prof. Rakesh Sharma, Dr. Arun Kumar, Dr. Chinky Sangral, Prof. Nidhi, Prof. Vikram Jamwal, NSS volunteers, and students of the college. |
