Early Times Report JAMMU, June 2: Govt. Degree College (GDC) Vijaypur joined the global initiative of World No Tobacco Day, which was first celebrated by the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 31, 1987. The college, under the guidance of Principal Dr. (Prof.) Vandana Gupta, organized an event to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco products and encourage a tobacco-free lifestyle. The occasion witnessed the participation of teaching staff, non-teaching staff, NSS volunteers, and a significant number of students who took a pledge to abstain from tobacco consumption. The anti-tobacco oath emphasized the commitment to refrain from smoking or using any tobacco products and to motivate others, including family members and colleagues, to do the same. The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2023 is 'We Need Food, Not Tobacco,' highlighting the importance of prioritizing health and well-being over tobacco addiction. Dr. Vandana Gupta, the Principal, addressed the gathering and emphasized the college's dedication to the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, a government initiative to create a drug-free India. She urged students to be aware of the detrimental effects of tobacco use on physical, mental, and social health. The event was coordinated by Dr. Shittal Sharma, the Convenor of NSS, and co-coordinated by Prof. Poonam Kundan, the Convenor of the Eco-Club. Prof. Amanpreet Kour from the Punjabi Department played a pivotal role in organizing the program. Overall, the college's observance of World No Tobacco Day aimed to educate and inspire individuals to lead a tobacco-free life, contributing to a healthier and tobacco-free society. |
