Early Times Report
REASI, June 12: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), a part of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies of Jammu (SKUAST-J), conducted a training program on "Revitalization of millets for nutritional security" in Kans Brahman village of Pouni block, Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir. The program, held under the guidance of Vice Chancellor and Director Extension (DE) of SKUAST-J, Prof. SK Gupta, witnessed active participation from local farmers.
Dr. Banarsi Lal, Senior Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi, welcomed the participants and emphasized the significance of the program. He highlighted the International Year of Millets-2023 and the importance of millets in addressing food security challenges. Dr. Lal discussed the long-standing presence of millets in Indian agriculture and their potential to combat climate-related disorders and sedentary lifestyle ailments. He emphasized that millets can provide balanced nutrition while requiring less water and agro-inputs through natural farming.
The training program covered various aspects such as millet production, consumption, nutritional security, and climate resilience. Dr. Lal elaborated on the health benefits of different types of millets and encouraged the participants to incorporate millets into their daily diets. He provided insights into the cultivation practices of various millet varieties, highlighting their climate resilience and suitability for rain-fed conditions. Dr. Lal urged the farmers to increase the share of nutri-cereals in the national food supply and explore value-added products to enhance their income.
During the interactive session, farmers raised queries related to millet cultivation, which were addressed by the KVK scientists. Quality millet seeds were also distributed to the farmers. Awardee farmers, Ram Lal and Bansi Lal, shared their experiences in natural farming with the fellow participants, further motivating them to adopt millet cultivation practices. The farmers expressed their gratitude to KVK Reasi for promoting millets in the area.
Overall, the training program served as a platform for farmers to learn about the significance of millets, cultivation techniques, and value addition opportunities. It aimed to encourage the adoption of millet cultivation for enhanced nutrition, climate resilience, and increased income for farmers in Reasi district.
