Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 27: Rajesh Mukhi, preparing for Tawi Trekkers J&K's Mount Everest expedition in 2025, successfully summited Island Peak (Imja Tse) today. Accompanied by his sherpa, he safely navigated several crevasses and has now returned to Dingboche. Island Peak, located in Sagarmatha National Park in eastern Nepal, stands at an altitude of 6165m (20226ft) and was named so by the British Mount Everest Expedition in 1953 due to its appearance as an island amidst a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche.
Prior to conquering Island Peak, Rajesh Mukhi had undertaken an eight-day trek from Lukla to the Everest Base Camp for acclimatization and familiarization with the area. Notably, he had previously scaled Wilson Peak, the highest peak in Antarctica, in 2017.
In another development, Anukampa Sharma, also aspiring to join Tawi Trekkers J&K's Mount Everest expedition in 2025, will embark on a mountaineering expedition to Kang Yatse peak (6250m) after leaving for Leh on June 30, 2023. She had previously trekked to the Everest Base Camp in December 2022.
It is worth mentioning that only climbers from Tawi Trekkers J&K who have successfully completed the Advanced Course in Mountaineering, scaled two peaks over 6000m, and one peak over 7000m will be considered for selection in the Mount Everest expedition. The estimated cost per participant for the expedition is around Rs. 30 lakhs. As part of their preparations, participants have been advised to engage in mountaineering expeditions to standard peaks over 6000m. Additionally, the club plans to organize a mountaineering expedition to a peak over 7000m next year for the final selection of the team.
