Deforestation of Raika Forests threatens health of Jammu residents: Adv. Dogra
6/29/2023 10:23:02 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 29: Deforestation of Raika forests will have irreparable consequences for the health of the people of Jammu, warned Adv. Suresh Dogra, a senior Congress leader and social worker. Speaking at the inaugural function of the construction of a new High Court building in Raika, which is set to commence soon on forest land, Adv. Dogra expressed concern over the felling of approximately 38,000 trees (unofficial figure). He emphasized that this would lead to severe climatic changes and criticized the government for merely offering statements of reassurance without taking concrete actions.
Adv. Dogra highlighted that the impact of deforestation extends beyond the health of Jammu's residents, as it would also disrupt the lives of forest dwellers, including wildlife and birds, by depriving them of their natural habitats and food sources. He further criticized the government's decision to construct a new High Court building on already existing, well-vegetated land, considering it an unnecessary burden on the government exchequer.
Adv. Dogra voiced dissatisfaction with the unilateral decision-making process and expressed the discontentment of the public towards this development. He suggested that instead of cutting down forests, the government should have considered expanding the already constructed infrastructure, questioning the need for additional construction in the face of available resources.
