J&K’s complex politics
7/19/2023 10:41:05 PM
In the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, many interesting developments have taken place in the recent years.
Parties like the Peoples Conference led by Sajad Lone, the Apni Party led by Altaf Bukhari, and the Democratic Azad Progressive Party led by Ghulam Nabi Azad have refrained from joining the opposition parties that have forged an alliance ahead of 2024-Lok Sabha elections.
The Peoples Conference, the Apni Party and DAPP have chosen a neutral path and it seems the leaders of these parties want to remain in the good books of the Centre.
Leaders of these parties have reiterated on many occasions that they aim to bridge the gap between the government and the people. By positioning themselves as moderates they are trying to send a message to people of J&K that they support the development initiatives and don’t want to oppose any move which could reverse the progress which J&K has witnessed post abrogation of Article 370. Their aim appears to address the immediate issues facing J&K people, rather than getting caught up in ideological battles.
The decisions of these parties reflect the complex realities of J&K politics. The region has seen a shift in political dynamics, with traditional parties losing ground and new players emerging. These newer parties, led by Sajad Lone, Altaf Bukhari, and Ghulam Nabi Azad, are attempting to carve out their own spaces and have different priorities than established political forces.
It seems they believe that by staying away from opposition unity, they can better serve their respective constituencies. They argue that traditional political alliances have failed to address the specific challenges faced by J&K, and they want to change the status quo through unique approaches.
However, their decisions have also drawn criticism and traditional parties are terming these political formations as B-team of BJP. These parties are claiming that a united opposition would play a crucial role in forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in J&K.
Their opponents are accusing these parties of making attempts to appease the Centre.
While decision of Pc, Apni party and DAPP may be debated, it is essential to acknowledge the unique challenges faced by J&K and understand the motivations behind their choices.
As new players, they have the potential to bring fresh perspectives and ideas to the table and shape the future of the region.
