Cong in quandary
8/3/2023 11:05:22 PM
The Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir is finding itself in a quandary.
Rift within the party over seeking mandates for the upcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) polls have divided the Congress into factions.
The “grand old party” is finding it hard to remain relevant in the changed political scenario post August 5, 2019.
The ULB polls, scheduled to take place in the coming months, hold immense importance for every political party in Jammu and Kashmir. These elections will provide an opportunity to gauge public sentiment and allow these parties to make a comeback. For the Congress, which has seen a gradual erosion of its support base, these polls represent a lifeline and if the leaders keep on fighting with each other it can have far reaching consequences.
The internal division within the party ranks and lack of consensus on who should be given the mandate has made the things difficult for the party leadership. The ULB polls is an opportunity to reconnect with the people and re-establish the party’s presence in the region but divisions within the party are not helping the party’s cause.
This division among the Congress ranks could further erode its already diminished relevance in Jammu and Kashmir. The party leaders must understand infighting will not help in re-establishing its presence or addressing the concerns of the people who are looking for a credible voice in local governance.
The rift within the Congress Party has provided a chance to other parties to make inroads into the areas that were considered as bastions of the grand old party. Lack of cohesion and a clear vision within Congress is all set to diminish its credibility amongst voters.
The infighting in the Congress Party is setback for the party already struggling to remain afloat. If the party leadership fails to put its house in order there is every possibility about the Congress conceding more ground to its political rivals.
The party must come together, set aside differences, and present a united front to effectively challenge the other parties. Failure to do so will only accelerate the Congress’ decline in Jammu and Kashmir and further marginalize its role in shaping the region’s politics.
