JAMMU, Aug 12: The Indian Institute of Public Administration, J&K Regional Branch, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, J&K Advisory for Welfare and Development of Scheduled Castes, Government of Jammu & Kashmir, organized a one-day workshop aimed at enhancing awareness about the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955, and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The workshop was targeted at District Social Welfare Officers, Police Personnel (Deputy Superintendent of Police, Headquarters), Nodal Officers/Special Cells for the Protection of Civil Rights Act and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, Special Public Prosecutors, and newly empanelled Legal Advisors. Advocate Shruti Bist, a Supreme Court of India Advocate, delivered detailed discussions on the various provisions of these laws. She highlighted preventive measures that can be undertaken, the role of law enforcement agencies, challenges that may arise, and the responsibilities of police officers in effectively implementing these Acts. The workshop included the screening of a video depicting the implementation of the Acts in other states and union territories of India. During the opening ceremony, Ms. Sheetal Nanda, IAS, Commissioner Secretary of the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Jammu & Kashmir, emphasized that these laws were implemented in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir following its reorganization in 2019. She outlined the various initiatives undertaken by the Social Welfare department to promote the government's vision of social integration, equality, and the inclusion of marginalized sections of society. |
