DARHAL, Aug 18: In honor of International Youth Day, observed on August 12th each year, Government Degree College (GDC) Darhal took an active step towards raising awareness about a critical issue among the youth. The Red Ribbon Club of GDC Darhal, in collaboration with the NSS (National Service Scheme) unit of the college, organized an insightful extension lecture on the topic of Drug Abuse. The lecture aimed to educate and empower the young minds about the harmful effects of drug addiction and their role in shaping a sustainable world.
Dr. Shakeel Ahmed Khan, a seasoned Physician, was the esteemed resource person for the event. The program was initiated by Dr. Sunil Kumar Mangoch, the Convener of the Red Ribbon Club, who warmly welcomed Dr. Shakeel Ahmed Khan and highlighted the significance of the occasion for the students. Dr. Mangoch also shed light on this year's theme, "Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World," emphasizing the importance of knowledge, abilities, values, and attitudes required for a sustainable and resource-efficient society.
Dr. Shakeel Ahmed Khan's lecture provided students with statistical insights into the prevalence of drug addiction in the country. He delved into the adverse effects of drug abuse, both in terms of financial implications and its impact on health. The resource person also discussed various measures that can be taken to assist individuals who are struggling with drug addiction. He underlined the pivotal role that students can play in promoting the well-being, education, and participation of young people in shaping their communities and the world on a larger scale.
Around 60 students from the college actively engaged in the event, expressing their curiosity about the topic and posing thoughtful questions to the resource person, all of which were adeptly addressed.
The event was conducted under the esteemed guidance of Prof. M.H. Shah, the Principal of GDC Darhal. Prof. Shah emphasized the global significance of International Youth Day in recognizing the contributions of young people to global development and their potential to address various challenges. Prof. Tahir Qureshi, Head of the English Department, added that this day serves as a reminder of the integral role that young individuals can play in creating a more inclusive and promising future for all.
The coordination of the event was carried out by Dr. Sunil Kumar Mangoch, the Convener of the Red Ribbon Club and NSS Program Officer. The formal vote of thanks was extended by Dr. Ahsan-Ul-Rehman Rizvi, Head of the Arabic Department.
The event concluded with a pledge ceremony, wherein attendees took a vow to raise awareness about drug abuse and HIV/AIDS, signifying their commitment to spreading awareness and combating these critical issues within their community and beyond.
