JAMMU, Aug 18: The Department of Psychology at the University of Jammu organized a highly informative lecture cum interactive session on August 18, 2023. The esteemed resource person for the event was Prof. Mamta Sharma from the Department of Psychology at Punjabi University, Patiala.
The session was initiated with a warm welcome by Prof. Sangita Gupta, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and In-Charge Head of the Department of Psychology. Prof. Gupta emphasized the critical role of psychologists in combatting drug addiction.
Prof. Mamta Sharma, an expert in drug addiction awareness, prevention, and student welfare, delivered an enlightening talk. She discussed the concept of "Nasha Mukht Mohalla" (Addiction-Free Community) and stressed the significance of creating environments free from the clutches of addiction. Prof. Sharma highlighted that drug addiction does not discriminate based on gender and explained that girls are equally vulnerable to its effects. The speaker also underscored the importance of a harm reduction approach, which involves minimizing the negative outcomes of substance use while promoting safer behaviors.
Delving into the topic further, Prof. Sharma elaborated on the effectiveness of buddy programs that offer support and guidance to those grappling with addiction. She also discussed the concept of liquor being a potential 'gateway' to alcohol consumption. Prof. Sharma emphasized the pivotal role psychologists play in countering drug addiction. Their expertise in comprehending human behavior, mental health, and effective intervention strategies equips them to contribute significantly to the development of comprehensive and targeted approaches for prevention, treatment, and recovery.
The lecture also included an engaging question-and-answer session, allowing attendees to seek Prof. Mamta's insights. Faculty members, scholars, and students actively participated, making the event an enriching experience for all. The event underscored the university's commitment to raising awareness about drug addiction and the critical role of psychology in addressing this complex societal issue.
