NCUI signs MoU with Unnat Bharat Abhiyan to empower cooperatives | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 19: The National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI) has taken significant steps towards empowering cooperatives by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA). This initiative aims to drive collaboration between these two organizations to foster sustainable growth and development in rural India. The signing ceremony was attended by key figures including Shri Dileep Sanghani, President of NCUI, Dr. Chandrapal Singh Yadav, President of ICA-AP, and Dr. Bijendra Singh, Chairman of NAFED and Vice-Chairman of NCUI. Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), initiated by the Ministry of Education, Government of India in 2014, seeks to facilitate collaboration between higher educational institutions and rural communities. The program's objective is to identify development challenges in rural areas and find appropriate solutions for sustainable growth. With a network spanning over 3600 colleges and 18000 villages across India, UBA aims to create a synergy between academia and society. The collaboration between NCUI and UBA will focus on research and development activities to address challenges faced by farmers and cooperatives. Leveraging technology and innovative approaches, they plan to promote entrepreneurship development among marginalized sections of society and the villages affiliated with UBA. Strategies will be formulated to encourage natural farming, including millet production, sustainable lifestyles, and ecology-friendly practices. The partnership also aims to identify, support, and popularize indigenous products, processes, and traditional artisanal skills for income enhancement. Additionally, NCUI and UBA will collaborate to establish new cooperatives, engaging youth and women in emerging areas of the economy. UBA will foster a cooperative identity among students to establish campus and other types of cooperatives. The technical expertise of UBA will be utilized to identify and promote cost-effective and efficient production and processing technologies for the benefit of artisans and cooperatives. The two organizations intend to set up centers of excellence for showcasing successful technological innovations in rural development. Workshops at national and regional levels will also be organized to facilitate knowledge dissemination and capacity building. ASSOCHAM Supports Cooperative and SHG Empowerment in J&K In a related development, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) has shown its commitment to supporting cooperatives and self-help groups (SHGs) in Jammu & Kashmir. Manik Batra, Chairman of ASSOCHAM (J&K) and Chairman of ConsulTech Group, engaged with Prof. V K Vijay and the Delhi IIT team to understand the components of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan. He subsequently met with Dr. Sudhir Mahajan, Chief Executive of NCUI, and expressed interest in planning collaborative interventions with NCUI and the UBA team at IIT Jammu. The focus of these interventions will be on empowering cooperatives and SHGs through technology in the Jammu region.
