Girdawar receives 2 years imprisonment in corruption case, Court criticizes Revenue Department | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 19: In a significant development, Girdawar Mohd Ashraf has been sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 20,000 in a trap case. The Special Judge Anticorruption Jammu Tahir Khurshid Raina presided over the case and directed that Girdawar Mohd Ashraf be taken into custody and sent to District Jail Jammu to serve his sentence. The court also made a noteworthy observation regarding the state of affairs in the Revenue Department. The court commented that there seems to be something deeply wrong within the department, akin to the famous line from Shakespeare's "Hamlet" that "something is rotten in the state of Denmark." This is the second consecutive conviction of a Revenue Official, following the recent conviction of a Patwari. The court highlighted the significance of these officials' roles at the grassroots level and expressed concern about the recurring instances of corruption and misconduct within the Revenue Department. These acts of corruption have wider implications, leading to conflicts, chaos, and even more severe criminal cases. The court emphasized that the Revenue Department should take immediate steps to address corruption within its ranks. It urged the officials in charge to take a proactive stance against corruption and work to eradicate it entirely, particularly at the lower levels where it has a direct impact on the general public. In the judgment, Girdawar Mohd Ashraf was sentenced to one year of simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 10,000 for committing offenses under Section 4-A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and another year of simple imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 10,000 for offenses under Section 5(2) of the same Act. Both sentences will run concurrently. In case of non-payment of the fine, the convict will face an additional three months of simple imprisonment. This case highlights the determination of the judiciary to address corruption and hold accountable those who engage in such practices, and it sends a clear message to government departments to take steps towards transparency and accountability. |
