KVK, promotes organic turmeric, ginger cultivation to combat monkey menace | | | Early Times Report
Reasi, Aug 27: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, operating under the umbrella of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J), has undertaken a significant initiative to promote organic turmeric and ginger cultivation in the Reasi district. This initiative, led by the dynamic Vice Chancellor, Prof. BN Tripathi, and guided by Director Extension (DE), Prof. SK Gupta of SKUAST-J, aims to address the challenge posed by monkey menace that damages crops and adversely impacts farmers’ income. Dr. Banarsi Lal, Senior Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi, highlighted that certain pockets of the district face a serious threat due to monkey attacks on crops, leading to substantial losses for farmers. Organic turmeric and ginger cultivation, however, present a solution to this problem, as these crops remain unaffected by monkeys’ interference. Dr. Banarsi Lal emphasized that both turmeric and ginger hold significant potential as alternative crops in areas prone to monkey disturbances. KVK, Reasi’s scientists are actively supporting farmers by providing technical assistance and encouraging the commercial cultivation of organic turmeric and ginger, thereby producing chemicals-free and safe crops. KVK’s scientists are guiding farmers in the preparation and application of organic formulations, including beejamrit, jeevamrit, cow urine, Panchgavya, fermented butter milk, and vermicompost. Neem Oil, Neem Cake, organic fungicides, and natural manures are recommended to ensure the organic growth of turmeric and ginger. This approach not only promotes sustainable farming practices but also reduces the cost of cultivation. KVK is dedicated to providing ongoing guidance to farmers on organic disease management, insect-pest control, and nutrient optimization for both turmeric and ginger crops. Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi emphasized that Reasi district possesses significant potential for organic turmeric and ginger cultivation. He encouraged farmers to engage in commercial-scale organic cultivation, which can significantly boost their income and create employment opportunities. Dr. Qureshi noted that organic turmeric and ginger contribute to improved human health by enhancing the body’s immunity. Additionally, value addition to these crops can increase farmers’ income. Observing the successful outcomes achieved by pioneering growers, many new farmers are now expressing a keen interest in adopting organic turmeric and ginger cultivation methods. This initiative not only addresses the monkey menace issue but also advances sustainable agricultural practices and economic well-being in the Reasi district. |
