GDC Udhampur Celebrates National Sports Day with Chess &Badminton Tournaments

Udhampur, Aug 29: GDC Udhampur, in line with the ongoing Azadi Ka Amrut kaal programs and to promote the FIT India and Khelo India campaigns on National Sports Day, hosted a two-day Intra-college Knockout Chess and Badminton tournaments. The event was organized under the guidance of Principal Dr. Romesh Kumar Gupta and coordinated by Dr. Ajay Kumar Sharma, along with the NSS, NCC, NCORD, and DSW units of the college.
The patron and chief guest, Dr. Romesh Kumar Gupta, praised the initiative of Dr. Ajay Sharma and his team for organizing the Knockout Tournaments to celebrate National Sports Day. In commemoration of Major Dhyan Chand, he emphasized the importance of sports in the college’s history and the nation’s sports culture. Dr. Gupta highlighted that sports can serve as a powerful tool against negative influences, like drugs, while fostering discipline and sportsmanship.
The Knockout tournament was inaugurated in the Multipurpose Hall of the college on August 28, where Prof. Romesh Atri, Prof. Sanjay Kumar, and Dr. Ajay Sharma played warm-up games with the Badminton players. In Chess, Swati emerged as the winner in the girls’ category, while Govind Singh secured the gold in the boys’ category. The Badminton Singles was won by Akshay of Sem III, and the Doubles by the duo of Akshay and Vansh.
Approximately 100 students participated in different games throughout the event. The valedictory session was held in the college Vatika, where the Chief Guest felicitated the players and winners were awarded medals by the Principal. Dr. Pankaj Sharma, the convener of NCORD, shared the message of adopting sports and rejecting drugs as part of the Nashamukt Bharat campaign.
The event witnessed the presence and support of various faculty members and students, contributing to the success of the celebration of National Sports Day.
