Shiv Sena demands 50% reservation for women in all elections | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 6: On the 27th death anniversary of Maasaheb Meena Tai Thackeray, Shiv Sena (UBT) activists gathered at the party's central office in Jammu to pay their heartfelt tributes. During the event, State President Manish Sahni led the tribute by offering floral condolences to Maa Meenatai. However, this solemn occasion also served as a platform for a significant call to action. Sahni, addressing the gathering, raised a strong voice advocating for the empowerment of women, who make up half of the country's population. He passionately demanded a 50 percent reservation for women in all elections held across the country. Sahni lamented that even after 75 years of independence, women continue to be denied their rightful place in the political arena. Despite the government's initiatives such as Amrit Mahotsav and the widespread hoisting of the flag, the freedom of women in our independent nation is still marred by unanswered questions. Highlighting existing legislation, Sahni pointed out that several states, including Maharashtra, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh, have enacted laws ensuring 50% reservation for women in Panchayats and local bodies. He criticized the draft reservation for women in Jammu and Kashmir's local body elections and urged for an increase in reservation to meet the demands of half the female population. Sahni underscored that in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, women turned out to vote in equal numbers as men, marking a significant milestone in the journey toward gender equality in Indian politics. However, he lamented that out of a total of 788 members in both houses of the Indian Parliament, only 103 are women, accounting for a mere 13%. The situation is even more dismal in State Assemblies. Sahni further informed the gathering that a heated debate is currently taking place regarding a Bill proposing 33% reservation for women in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, set to be presented in the special session of Parliament from September 18th to 22nd. He urged the government to consider increasing this reservation to 50% instead of remaining at 33%. Shiv Sena firmly believes that providing 50% reservation for women will empower and amplify their voices, ensuring their equal participation and representation in the political landscape of the country. The event witnessed the presence of prominent party leaders, including Meenakshi Chibber, Gen Secretary Vikas Bakshi, Chairman Rakesh Gupta, Vice President Sanjeev Kohli, Balwant Singh, Rajesh Handa, Geeta Lakhotra, Dimple, and many others, who echoed the call for greater gender parity in Indian politics. |
