Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 8: In collaboration with the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Jammu, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-Jammu) organized a one-day workshop on "Revival of Cottage-Based Industry, Conservation, and Branding of ITKs" as part of the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP). The event aimed to promote the economic and holistic development of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir through the revival of cottage-based industries.
The workshop featured Megha Baogia, Deputy Director Planning of Handicrafts and Handloom, as the chief guest. She emphasized the significance of cottage-based industries for the region's economic growth.
Dr. R. K. Bhardwaj, Principal Investigator of HADP, welcomed the Chief Guest, resource persons, and artisans (38 in total) to the workshop. He highlighted the importance of brand development, product authentication, modernization of machinery, technological advancements, and common infrastructure development for traditional indigenous knowledge systems (ITKs) in Basohli.
Tanuj Dogra, an expert in designing, delivered a comprehensive lecture on the role of designing and dyeing in adding value to shawls and wool-based products. Sham Lal, President of the weaver's society, discussed the pashmina sector in Basohli and raised issues hindering its growth.
A two-way interaction between experts and artisans allowed for a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by weavers in the field. Artisans highlighted issues such as lower returns due to outdated charkhas and looms, and they requested assistance for industry revival, including the provision of modern tools like fast-spinning charkhas (pedal-operated) and looms.
The weavers also stressed the need for a testing lab in Basohli for authenticating pashmina shawls, controlling quality, and preventing duplication. They called for training programs on designing and fine wool shawl preparation. The shortage of pashmina in the area, which affects regular weaving and income, was another concern raised by weavers.
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Vikas Mahajan, Co-PI of HADP, expressing gratitude to the Chief Guest, speakers, and artisans for their participation in the successful event.
