KVK organises Field Day on Maize Crop

REASI, Sept 22: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu(SKUAST-J) organized field day on maize crop here at Talwara village in Reasi district of J&K which was enthuastically attended by a number of farmers of the village. The programme was organised under the dynamic stewardship of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Prof.BN Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension, Prof.SK Gupta of SKUAST-J. The programme was initiated by Dr. Banarsi Lal, Sr. Scientist &Head of KVK, Reasi with the warm welcome of the farmers. He started the programme with the brief objectives of Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) especially on maize crop and elaborated the scientific technologies by which farmers can increase the maize production. He informed the farmers that the maize crop is sensitive to the moisture stress and moisture excessive conditions and suggested them that they should drain the water from maize fields. He further added that Front Line Demonstrations laid by the KVK signify the technologies by which farmers can get maximum yield from per unit area per unit time. He suggested the farmers to use only the recommended varieties for the district and stressed on the cluster based approach. He discussed in detail on the organic management practices for the sustainable maize production. He emphasized on line sowing in maize crop by which weeding/hoeing in maize crop becomes easier which further helps to increase the maize production. He suggested the proper spacing between plant-to-plant and line-to-line in maize crop. He suggested the farmers to use the quality and disease free seed of maize and gave a detail view of certain technologies which are needed for scientific maize production. He motivated the farmers for the commercial farming of maize. He guided farmers on seed treatment in maize crop. The scientist elaborated important diseases of maize crop and gave their proper control measures. He discussed on the soil fertility and stressed on the soil testing before the application of nutrients in the crops. He also elaborated the concept of natural farming and farmers were educated on the formulation of organic inputs such as Beejamrit, Jeevamrit, Panchgavya, Cow Urine, mulching etc. He urged farmers to take advantage of KVK expertise for better agricultural development of the area. A field visit was also arranged during the programme. Farmers were motivated after observing the results of maize fields and were ready to adopt the technologies recommended by the KVK. In this programme various quarries regarding scientific maize production were asked by the farmers which KVK scientist answered in a satisfactorily way. Farmers thanked KVK, Reasi for organizing such a useful and informative programme. The programme was concluded by the progressive farmer of the area, Sh.Varinder Singh with the formal vote of thanks.
