Seminar on rising urbanization, its impact on environment held at GLDM GDC Hiranagar

Hiranagar, Sept 22: The Department of Environmental Sciences and Sociology organized a seminar on "Rising Urbanization and its Impacts on the Environment" at GLDM GDC Hiranagar. The event was presided over by the college's Principal, Dr. Pragya Khanna. Expert speakers at the seminar included Prof. Shujat Khan, Dr. Shakun Sharma, and Dr. Mehak Gupta.
The seminar began with a formal welcome address by Dr. Arun Kumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology. He commended the efforts of Dr. Pragya Khanna, Principal of GLDM Degree College Hiranagar, for her encouragement and support in organizing the seminar. Participants from GCW Kathua, GDC Mahanpur, GDC Vijaypur, and the host college delivered speeches on the topic.
In the second part of the seminar, expert speakers shared their knowledge and insights with the audience. Urbanization, a defining feature of our era, has brought both opportunities and challenges to our communities. While urbanization has led to improved standards of living, economic growth, and increased access to services, it has also raised critical questions about its impact on the environment.
Prof. Shujat Khan, a Professor in computer sciences and an activist in social service, discussed the role of technology and digital platforms in understanding and mitigating the impact of urbanization on the environment. Dr. Shakun Sharma, an Assistant Professor in Sociology from Govt. Degree College Marh Jammu, addressed different aspects of urbanization and ways to ameliorate the social environment through various measures. Dr. Mehak Gupta, a Post-Doctoral fellow at SKUAST-Jammu, elaborated on ways to mitigate the negative impacts of urbanization and the new possibilities it has brought in agriculture and the social world.
Dr. Pragya Khanna, the Principal of the College, appreciated the efforts of the organizers and encouraged students to take a pledge to help tackle the harmful impacts of urbanization on the environment. The seminar was sponsored by JK Science Technology and Innovation Council, Government of Jammu and Kashmir.
The judges for the seminar were Dr. Davinder Kaur, Prof. Poonam Kundan, and Dr. Anil Kumar Dogra. After careful and rigorous discussions, the winners of the presentation were decided. Ms. Shubham of Semester 3rd at GLDM GDC Hiranagar secured the first position. The organizing committee, led by Prof. Neha Bhagat (Convenor) and Dr. Arun Kumar (Co-convenor), played a pivotal role in making the seminar successful. Other members included Prof. Vikram Jamwal, Dr. Jyoti Rani, Prof. Manjot Singh, Prof. Kiran Thapa, Prof. Nidhi Jarangal, and Dr. Bhart Bhushan. The program was also attended by Prof. Parveen Sharma, Prof. Arvind Kumar, Dr. Mukesh Kumar, Prof. Kamlesh, and Dr. Bhupinder Singh. The program concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Prof. Neha Bhagat, Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences.
