Jammu, Sept 22: Captain Bana Singh, the recipient of the Param Var Chakra, the country's highest gallantry award, has embarked on a new mission to protect and preserve the pristine beauty of Jammu & Kashmir. In a momentous announcement, he has been nominated as the Ambassador for the "War Against Waste" initiative in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The announcement was made by Mr. Charandeep Singh, Director of Rural Sanitation, J&K, during the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS 2023) campaign at the Captain Bana Singh Stadium in R.S. Pura, Jammu. SHS 2023, celebrated from 15th September to 2nd October, seeks to create a mass movement through community participation, reinforcing the idea that sanitation is a collective responsibility. It also serves as a prelude to Swachh Bharat Diwas on 2nd October, with participation from across the nation. The theme of SHS-2023 is 'Garbage Free India,' with a particular focus on visual cleanliness and the welfare of SafaiMitras (sanitation workers). The campaign aims to enhance cleanliness in high footfall public places, including bus stands, railway stations, cantonment boards, beaches, tourist spots, zoos, national parks, sanctuaries, historical monuments, heritage sites, riverfronts, ghats, drains, and waterways. The "War Against Waste" initiative is geared towards addressing waste management and environmental conservation challenges in rural Jammu & Kashmir. Captain Bana Singh's involvement as the ambassador will help raise awareness, promote sustainable practices, and inspire local communities to actively engage in waste reduction and the preservation of the region's natural beauty. Captain Bana Singh, whose remarkable military service has earned him widespread recognition for valor and dedication, is now dedicating himself to this vital mission. Having served on the front lines to defend the nation, his commitment to safeguarding the environment is unwavering. Addressing a large gathering during the SHS 2023 program, Captain Singh expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, stating, "Just as I dedicated my life to defending our country, I am now committed to defending our environment. Jammu & Kashmir's natural beauty is a national treasure, and we must ensure it remains pristine for generations to come." The event saw the participation of around 2000 individuals, including students, sportspeople, NCC cadets, PRIs (Panchayati Raj Institutions), prominent figures from adjoining areas, officials, and shopkeepers. Activities during the event included a Swachhata pledge, a cycle race, and a painting competition. The director recognized and awarded the top performers of the cycle race and painting competition. Other notable attendees included Ms. Sanna Khan, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Rural Sanitation, J&K, Ms. Preeti Sharma ACD Jammu, SDM R.S. Pura, Ms. Rajni BDO R.S. Pura, and other officials. |
