Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, Sept 23: In a series of celebrations of birthday of erstwhile Maharaja of Jammu & Kashmir, Senior Citizens' Club Udhampur also organized a program at club platform. Floral tributes were paid by members of the club. Speaking on the occasion, the President of the club applauded the contributions of a ruler of the state not only as a ruler but as a great educationist, progressive thinker and as a social reformer.
His reign ushered in reforms and people-friendly policies that endeared him to all, irrespective of class, religion and gender. Despite his royal status and absolute power, Maharaja Hari Singh was sensitive to changing times and he made efforts to gradually democratize the administration.
His approach to governance was evident in his iconic coronation speech, where he said, "For me all communities, religions and races are equal. All religions are mine and justice is my religion." He was a progressive ruler and believed in freedom of the press. Maharaja Hari Singh took steps to facilitate the publication of papers from Srinagar and Jammu by introducing the Press and Publication Act in April 1932.
As a result of personal political conspiracies emerging in the political context, Maharaja Hari Singh had to abdicate the throne and went to Mumbai and ultimately breathed his last there. On the occasion Club reiterated that Jammu & Kashmir Bank Limited (J&K Bank) was incorporated on October 1, 1938, by Maharaja Hari Singh with an initial paid up capital of ?5.00 Lakh that has now business turnover of more than over ?2000 billion and earning crores of rupees as profit but we never noticed the photograph or reference of Maharaja on Bank's annual calendar. Club appealed to the Chairman and Board of Directors to take it seriously and dedicate the front page of next year's annual calendar to Maharaja Hari Singh. Others who spoke were Raj Guru Gen Secretary and Dr. Adarsh Chairman of the Club.
