Jammu, Oct 9: The Inter-Collegiate Chess (M&W) Championship 2023–24 kicked off today at the University Gymnasium Hall, organized by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu. The event saw a significant turnout of participants and guests. In the men’s section, GDC Nowshera secured a victory against GDC Akhnoor with a score of 3-1 points in the first match. In the second match, GDC Bishnah triumphed over GDC Marheen by 3-1 points. In the women’s section, GDC Kathua narrowly defeated GCW Parade by 3-2 points, with the final outcome decided through a best-versus-best match after a 2-2 draw in the main game. The second women’s match witnessed GDC Bhagwati Nagar beating GDC Bishnah by 3-1. GCW Kathua secured a decisive 4-0 victory over GDC Purmandal in the third match. In the fourth match, GCW Udhampur clinched a 3-2 points win over GDC Billawar through a best-versus-best contest, following a 2-2 draw in the main game. Dr. Daud Iqbal Baba, Director of the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu, officially opened the tournament by making the first move (e4) in the presence of the physical education teacher of the participating teams. The matches were officiated by Sh. S. P. Sharma, Sh. Sushil Sawhney, S. Inderjeet Singh, and Padam Dev Singh. Tomorrow, the next round of matches for the men’s section is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., followed by the women’s section at 1:00 p.m. |
