KVK holds field day programme on sesame crop | | | Early Times Report REASI, Oct 17: In an effort to promote scientific and sustainable farming practices, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, in collaboration with the Directorate of Extension, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J), and ICAR-ATARI Zone-1, Ludhiana, recently organized a highly successful field day dedicated to sesame crop cultivation. The event, which took place in Kheral village of Pouni block in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, saw a significant turnout of enthusiastic local farmers. Dr. Banarsi Lal, Senior Scientist, and Head of KVK, Reasi, initiated the program with a warm welcome to the participants. He stressed the significance of sesame as a leading oilseed crop in the region and emphasized the need for scientific farming practices. Dr. Lal encouraged farmers to adopt the latest technologies recommended by SKUAST-Jammu, underlining the importance of using quality sesame seeds for cultivation. He highlighted that sesame is a low-water-demanding crop, making it a potential winner for the region. The field day covered various aspects of sesame cultivation, including weed management, soil testing, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), Integrated Disease Management (IDM), and how to tackle major insect pests and diseases affecting sesame crops. Furthermore, the program shed light on the value addition potential in sesame crops and the significance of oilseed cakes in livestock feed. Krishi Vigyan Kendra had also implemented Front Line Demonstrations of improved sesame varieties (RT-351) in different locations throughout the district, and local farmers displayed a keen interest in the demonstrated technologies. The event fostered interactive sessions between farmers and scientists, allowing the former to clarify their queries and gather valuable insights. Anita Devi, a respected and accomplished farmwoman from the area, was also acknowledged during the program for her exceptional contributions to agriculture. The farmers expressed their gratitude to KVK, Reasi, for its dedication to promoting scientific sesame farming in the region. The program concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Anita Devi.
