Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 19: The Department of Environmental Sciences and the Eco-Club of Government College for Women, Bhagwati Nagar, came together to organize an essay writing competition centered on the theme "Khadi: Journey from Freedom to Fashion," as part of the Khadi Mahaotsav celebration. The event aimed to engage students and promote awareness about the historical and contemporary significance of Khadi, handloom, and locally crafted products within India's larger economic and environmental context.
Dr. Meeru Abrol, the College Principal, commended the active involvement of the students in this significant event. She emphasized that the core objective of Khadi Mahotsav is to sensitize and educate the younger generation, particularly students, about the vital role that Khadi has played in India's history. Dr. Abrol highlighted Khadi's pivotal role in the swadeshi movement and its connection to the struggle for India's independence. Her words underscored the event's broader purpose, which is to instill a deep appreciation and understanding of India's heritage, economic sustainability, and its contribution to the nation's freedom movement.
Approximately 25 students participated in the essay writing competition, showcasing their creativity and effective expression of thoughts.
The competition was adjudicated by Prof. Gagan Jyoti and Prof. Nisha Bhagat. Priya Devi, a student from the 5th semester, secured the first position, while Anjali Devi from the 3rd semester secured the second position. The third position was jointly held by Sanu Thakur from the 3rd semester and Sania Rajput from the 5th semester.
The event was expertly organized by Dr. Mosmi Raina, the convenor of the Eco Club at the college. It successfully achieved its goal of celebrating Khadi's historical significance and its contemporary relevance as a sustainable fashion choice, all while nurturing the creative talents of the participating students.
