10/21/2023 11:21:56 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 21: To mark World Mental Health Day, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSSH) at MIER College of Education organized a guest lecture and interactive session. The event revolved around the theme “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right” and featured Dr. Rajinder Kumar, a Consultant Psychiatrist at Sankalp Manorog Clinic in Jammu, as the resource person.
Dr. Monika Bajaj, Head of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, along with faculty and students of B.A. Honours Psychology and the Diploma in Guidance and Counselling program, attended the lecture.
Dr. Priya Choudhary, Program Coordinator for Psychology, welcomed the resource person and attendees. She highlighted Dr. Kumar’s background, including his M.D. in psychiatry from CIP Ranchi and his experience as a senior resident at AIIMS New Delhi and as a lecturer at Govt. Medical College, Jammu.
Dr. Kumar began by explaining the distinctions between psychiatrists and psychologists. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication, while psychologists hold doctoral degrees in psychology but cannot prescribe medication in most states. The lecture focused on the concept that mental health is an essential part of an individual’s overall well-being, and it is considered a fundamental human right by various international organizations and agreements. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, established by the United Nations in 1948, emphasizes the right to health, including both physical and mental health. Dr. Kumar discussed the bio-psychosocial model and provided in-depth explanations of various categories of psychological disorders, including psychosis, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and more. He elaborated on the symptoms and treatment plans for each category. The lecture was followed by an interactive Q&A session where students had the opportunity to seek clarification on their doubts. Prof. Adit Gupta, Director and Principal of MIER College, commended the school’s efforts and emphasized that the idea of mental health as a universal human right is well-supported by international declarations and agreements. Ensuring access to mental health services, reducing stigma, and promoting the well-being of individuals with mental health conditions are crucial aspects of upholding human rights and fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.
The program was skillfully conducted by Dr. Taniya Raina, Assistant Professor at SSSH, and concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Sonika Kumari, another Assistant Professor at SSSH.
