GCPF advocates for equal rights, opportunities for general category citizens | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 21: The General Category People's Front (GCPF-JK) convened a meeting today, chaired by Raj Kumar Banathia. During the meeting, the Front discussed several pressing issues that affect the general category population. Prof. Yash Paul Sanson, President of the Front, strongly criticized the discriminatory socio-economic and political policies of the government, which have led to the marginalization and neglect of the majority community, the General Category. Prof. Sanson emphasized the need for a General Category Commission (GCC), a demand made by the Swarn Castes, to address the issues faced by the General Category. The Front condemned the government's attempts to sideline the General Category in favor of divisive caste and religious politics. The Front demanded that the General Category Commission suggest criteria for identifying economically and socially backward sections within the General Category and provide them with equal opportunities, quotas, concessions, and special privileges, similar to other communities. The Front also voiced its concerns about discrimination, neglect, and marginalization of the unreserved category, which has persisted due to restrictions on the application of fundamental rights. The Front called for an amendment to the constitution to ensure 'Equal Rights and Equal Law for all' through an 'Equality Act.' It advocates for universal equality and extending the benefits, privileges, concessions, and welfare schemes guaranteed to reserved categories and minorities to the General Category. The Front urged the government to resolve the reservation issue permanently and take immediate legal measures to end injustices against the General Category. The Front expressed its concerns about the hardships faced by the common people, employees, and pensioners due to high electricity and water charges, service taxes, and tolls. The rising prices of essential commodities and inflation have strained the budgets of common households. V.K. Sharma, Vice-President, called for the release of three blocked installments of D.A. and the enhancement of medical allowance for JK UT employees and pensioners from Rs. 300 to Rs. 1000 per month, as the allowance has remained stagnant for 25 years.
