University of Jammu's 'Save Tawi Campaign' promotes environmental responsibility | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 23: In a bid to raise awareness about the critical need for preserving the Tawi River and protecting it from pollution, the Department of Environmental Sciences and the Green Campus Task Force (GCTF-JU) at the University of Jammu organized the 'Save Tawi Campaign.' This eco-conscious event took place on the banks of the Tawi River, coinciding with the last day of the Navratri festival. The primary objective of this campaign was to sensitize the public to the importance of maintaining the cleanliness of the Tawi River and the detrimental effects of immersing plastic and other materials during religious rituals like the immersion of 'Khetri.' To accomplish this, student volunteers were divided into groups, and each group engaged with the public, educating them about the harmful consequences of waste, particularly the use of plastic materials, and provided simple solutions for the effective management of such waste. During the campaign, the students also played a pivotal role in collecting materials like chunri, coconuts, pots, and plastic waste from the devotees. They meticulously segregated the materials, permitting only the immersion of 'Khetri' into the river, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Professor Piyush Malaviya, Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences, emphasized the urgency of adopting adequate measures and techniques for the protection and conservation of the Tawi River. He highlighted the river's status as the lifeline of Jammu and the pivotal role it plays in the region's ecosystem. Dr. Deepika Slathia, Member Secretary of GCTF-JU, stressed the importance of involving students in such campaigns. She noted that these initiatives instill a sense of environmental responsibility and offer a practical and interactive way to educate young minds about the causes of water pollution and the significance of conserving our water bodies. The efforts of the department were met with appreciation and wholehearted cooperation from the devotees who participated in the campaign. Their involvement was instrumental in making this initiative a resounding success. The event witnessed the active participation of several dignitaries, including Dr. Rakesh Kumar Atri, Dr. Ravinder Kumar, and Dr. Ranjan Sharma. Together, they shared their insights and commitment to the cause of safeguarding the Tawi River and ensuring a sustainable environment for the community. The 'Save Tawi Campaign' serves as a compelling example of how educational institutions can drive positive change by promoting environmental responsibility and creating awareness about the vital need to protect our natural resources. In their continued efforts, the University of Jammu and its partners aim to ensure that the Tawi River remains a symbol of life and prosperity for generations to come. |
