GDC Akhnoor Hosts Successful Silk Technology Demonstration | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
AKHNOOR, Oct 28: Government Degree College in Akhnoor recently organized a one-day technology demonstration program titled “Mulberry Silk Reeling and Weaving.” The event aimed to raise awareness about the development of post-cocoon technology and its significance in the silk industry. Dr. Romilla Malla Bhat, Principal of the college, extended a warm welcome to the esteemed guests, Sh. N. S. Gahlot, Scientist-D/Zonal Officer, and Sh. Sandeep Kumar Tickoo, Sr. Technical Officer, both from the Central Silk Board Jammu. The demonstration offered valuable insights into various aspects of Indian silk, including raw silk production and silk reeling methods. Mr. Gahlot also presented information about different types of yarn and fabrics produced from mulberry cocoons, along with the machinery and equipment under the Silk Samagra-II scheme. Highlighting the event’s importance, Sh. N. S. Gahlot emphasized the need for India to become self-sufficient in silk production. He urged the students to play an active role in connecting the silk industry with handloom weavers and artisans and developing value-added products. The students were also educated on silk yarn blends, such as silk-wool and silk-cotton, as they observed the weaving process on handlooms. The event was made possible with the support of the Silk Technical Service Center Jammu, and their technical teams have committed to providing ongoing assistance to the college in collaboration with the Additional Director of the Sericulture Development Department, Government of Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Anil Kumar, Prof. Rubina Yasmeen, Prof. Slony Gupta, Prof. Pooja Devi, Prof. Vishally Sharma, Prof. Nidhi Suri, Dr. Puyesh Kant, and Prof. Sunil Kumar, along with enthusiastic students, attended the demonstration-cum-interaction program. Principal of the college, in her address, emphasized that this skill development course in silk cocoon production, reeling, and weaving would be beneficial for students, equipping them to enter the sericulture and silk business while fostering entrepreneurship. In a gesture of gratitude, Prof. Jyoti Sharma conveyed a formal vote of thanks to all those involved in making the event a resounding success. The “Mulberry Silk Reeling and Weaving” demonstration at Government Degree College Akhnoor has opened up new horizons for students interested in silk technology and has underscored the importance of self-sufficiency and innovation in India’s silk production industry. |
