DM stresses on information sharing for strategic clampdown on drug menace

JAMMU, Nov 2: District Magistrate, Sachin Kumar Vaishya, on Thursday chaired the district-level Committee meeting under the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD). Senior Superintendent of Police, Dr. Vinod Kumar, was also present in the meeting.
The meeting discussed different measures to curb drug abuse and trafficking in the district. The DM emphasised the need for identification of drug abuse hotspots and individuals trapped in addiction. He directed the Chief Education Officer to identify and notify the authorities about related activities in and around educational institutions, and notify places that serve as hotspots for illegal exchange of drugs.
The DM said that education institutions have a special role in awareness generation about the drug issue. He directed Principals of Colleges to identify and notify drug users to the authorities. The Educational Institutions were asked to appoint nodal officers for coordination with the district administration on this issue. The DM further directed the Chief Medical Officer to provide services of counsellors to help those in need of rehabilitation. He also highlighted the vital role of the District Social Welfare department in rehabilitation.
The DM stressed the need for strict enforcement of the Tobacco Control measures. He also laid strict emphasis on data sharing among different departments and organs of the district administration for a strategic clampdown on the drug menace.
The Youth Service & Sports Department was asked to increase sports activities and promote a healthy lifestyle among youngsters. The DM also mandated surprise checks of drug stores and medical shops, and directed strict action against those found violating the rules.
The DM also highlighted the role of other departments and agencies, and said that united efforts are needed to have a multiplier effect in this war against drugs. He also emphasised the importance of public participation and trust in the administration.
Addressing the meeting, the SSP insisted on the role of nodal officers designated in educational institutions, and the role of rehabilitation, counseling and treatment. He also stressed the need for coordination for an effective stance against drugs. He informed the meeting that all drug-related information can be shared on helpline number 9086100100. He also said that the goal should be to set feasible and practical targets to achieve a drug-free society.
