Early Times Report REASI, Dec 13: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, operating under the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J), is actively promoting and educating farmers in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir on organic vegetable cultivation. The initiative aims to encourage farmers to engage in the commercial cultivation of organic vegetables to produce high-quality, fresh organic produce, thereby increasing income and employment opportunities. Dr. Banarsi Lal, Senior Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi, highlighted the guidance provided to farmers on various aspects of organic farming. Farmers receive education on organic formulations, including vermicomposting technology, cow urine, Panchgavya, beejamrit, jeevamrit, and fermented buttermilk preparations, utilizing locally available resources. The use of organic inputs such as Neem Cake, fruit fly traps, pheromone traps, sticky traps, Neem Oil, and biofertilizers is also emphasized to enhance yields and returns. The KVK focuses on the commercial cultivation of organic vegetables as a means to boost income and employment in hilly areas. Dr. Banarsi Lal emphasized the benefits of organic farming, including improved soil health, production of safe and healthy food, and reduced cultivation costs. Technical guidelines covering crop rotation, pulses production, mulching, microbial cultures, and other aspects are regularly provided to farmers. The adoption of a cluster-based approach is part of KVK's strategy to promote organic vegetable cultivation, and the center also offers guidance on the cultivation of specific crops like lettuce. Additionally, KVK assists farmers in proper packaging, marketing, and branding practices to increase the shelf life of organic vegetables. The success of organic vegetable cultivation has attracted the interest of new farmers in the region, contributing to the growth of organic farming practices. |
