KVK, Reasi promotes organic turmeric and ginger cultivation | | | Early Times Report REASI, Dec 16: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting and educating the farmers on the organic turmeric and ginger cultivation in Reasi distt. of J&K under the dynamic stewardship of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Prof.B.N. Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension (DE), Prof.Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-J. According to Sr. Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal farmers of some areas of the district are badly affected by the monkeys menace as they damage the farmers' main crops and thus directly affect their farm income. He said that organic turmeric and ginger cultivation have immense potential in the distt. and turmeric and ginger crops are not damaged by the monkeys. He further said both turmeric and ginger are viable alternative crops in monkeys' prone areas and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi scientists are technically guiding the farmers and encouraging them for the commercial cultivation of organic turmeric and ginger so that chemicals free turmeric and ginger can be produced. He added that the KVK scientists are guiding the farmers for the preparation of organic formulations such as beejamrit, jeevamrit, cow urine, Panchgavya, fermented butter milk etc. Farmers have also been suggested to use Neem Oil, Neem Cake, organic fungicides, manures etc. to produce the organic turmeric and ginger. He informed that organic farming is helpful in the production of safe and quality spices by reducing the cost of cultivation. He expressed that the farmers are continuously guided on the organic management of diseases, insect-pests and nutrients in both turmeric and ginger. He said that organic turmeric and ginger are helpful to improve the health status of human beings by improving the immunity of the body. He added that value addition in turmeric and ginger can open some new avenues of income and employment in rural areas. By observing the results of successful organic ginger and turmeric growers many new farmers are showing keen interest towards the cultivation of these crops. |
